Purchased this 12 volt camera and monitor at Costco for about $70.00
The camera is mounted to the hollow cap lip above the rear door and it points downward with a view of the rear step and about 5 to 6 feet of space behind it.

I drilled a hole into the cap lip and strung the power wire through it over to the side running light for power. I pulled the antenna wire into the cap lip and pulled it in the opposite direction of the power wire.

I doctored the photo to show the rear cam a little better (black against white doesn't photograph very well).

Close up of camera

The monitor taps into the power for the vanity mirror in the sun visor. (Ford F350 Lariat model)
The entire visor can be removed for bench work by removing two screws and disconnecting a quick connect. Monitor is attached by two stretch & Velcro bands.

Visor in up position

To use the rear view monitor, lower the visor, turn on parking lights and turn on monitor.

The picture is kind of grainy this overcast day but I can easily see the edge of the rear step and about 5 or 6 feet behind it.

Nice Rich. For my monitor, I went to an electronics store and bought a cigarette lighter adaptor plug with a long cord. Instead of having to turn on lights to power the monitor, I just plug it into the lighter or 12v outlet in the cab.

The Costco monitor is an amazing bargin. . .it came with a cigarette lighter plug cord, a fused cord like I used, a plug with three RGB jacks (the monitor can be used with other devices) and a USB port for charging other devices - plus the metal bracket and two types of ball & swivel plastic mounts for dash or vent mounting.

I use the cigarette lighter and power outlet for other devices and so opted for the curret set up.

Is the field of view large enough to see backing up a utility or boat trailer?

I don't think I could recommend it for that purpose.
It might work as intended: ie; mounted on the license plate of an automobile.
The instructions show it pointed backward (not downward like mine) and with a range of about 30 feet.
I suspect that there is some reception degradation due to the mounting or antenna location inside the upper rear cap of the camper.

Costco had this camera and monitor setup live in store.
The picture quality was excellent. . . but the camera was only inches away.

The way I look at it is if it only cost $70 and can save me even one minor backup incident, then it's paid for itself.
Cheap insurance.

That's funny. I just purchased the same camera from Costco and was wondering where I'm going to mount it. The directions say to tie into a reverse light circuit, but I'll do the same and tie into the lighting circuit as I always have my lights on. The extra peace of mind of being able to tell if the door is closed, step is up or bikes are securely attached is big for me. No matter how many times I check, I still wonder if I forgot to latch the door, put away the remote, etc.

Tinbender, mine works great for seeing all the way down the ramp.
