My gel coat finish looks like it is starting to oxidize. What puzzles me is that I keep a cover on it. Could the cover be causing the dull finish?

I'll guess that the cover doesn't have enough (or any) UV protection.
Is the oxidation noticeable more on one side than the other?

The passenger side of our camper is noticeably duller than the drivers side. The camper is exposed most of the year with the passenger side facing south, our sunny side.
Moreover, the passenger side is definitely looking "scraped" as if it were brush whacked. . .mostly because it has been whacked, if ever so lightly, from a million roadside leaflets.

When in storage, the passenger side faces north. It is pretty dull looking to me and when I wipe the side with my hand I get a little chaulk residue. I used some stuff I got at Camping World to clean the camper in early Spring. I'm beginning to think that it might have stripped the wax without me knowing it. I've started doing a search for RV detailers to see if I can get someone to use a high speed buffer to put on a couple coats of new wax.

My 2004 camper has that problem as well. I usually spend a day and give it a good paste wax job to bring the shine back. It's good exercise too!

Wax will work and buffing will remove the chalking. Wax is very short lived and needs to be reapplied several times a year to maintain the protective layer It is not very effective against UV rays.

There is a product that is rated the best to protect from UV rays and will also stop the chalking. It is here http://www.303products.com/

I think it is worth a try. I like that you just spray on and wipe off, much better than all the work waxing.

Here is their ideas as to gel coat conditioning

Here is another discussion.
http://www.303products.com/shop303/index.cfm/category/315/does-303-replace-wax-on-fiberglass.cfm

Lastly here is a page dedicated to RV uses
http://www.303products.com/shop303/index.cfm/category/311/recreation-vehicle---rvs.cfm

It looks like in all cases you will be applying every other month or so. This stuff is just a lot less work IMO

303 is an awesome product and I started using it years ago for my boat interior. My interior still looks new and is 21 years old. Of course I do cover my boat when not in use.

As for the gel-coat, use products sold at a boating store since most boats have a gel-coat exterior. I do have some chalking in a few places on my boat and 303 seems to help, but my favorite for the exterior is Meguiar's boat care products. Very good stuff, but does require some elbow grease. I use their Flagship wax and boat wash on my camper and boat. I'm sure there are other good products also, but I swear by these.
