I caught the right rear jack foot on steel fence post when I turned sharply without quite clearing the post It laid the steel fence post over on it's side. Didn't hurt the jack but messed up the camper frame really bad.

Filed claim with insurance and will have it looked at after this trip.

Ouch, looks like the whole rear cap may have to come off to fix. I lucked out last year when a backed into a small fir tree. Had to do fiberglass repair on the bumper but saved from further damage because the camper slid forward in the truck bed about 2 inches. |

It may be more than just that. As the steel post was laid over, it created upward and outward pressure on the jack. I noticed the rear side panel doesn't look square anymore - may have separated the side frame as well.
Those jack feet hanging down from the rear are real "snag" points. Any camper with a large rear overhang is at risk for snagging the jack.

| And I thought I had it bad with my rogue wave event. I feel really bad for ya' Rich. Maybe the insurance company will total your camper and you can go get a new one. |

| WOW, I am really sorry that this happened to your camper. Is it a complete separation of the rear cap all the way inside the camper? Or did it just break up the rear area? |

Well, I'm sitting inside right now with a kitty on my lap - but last recall seeing daylight through the rear wardrobe cabinet floor. So yes, it pulled the rear cap OFF at the corner. And the storage compartment below wardrobe cabinet dropped the barbecue wand-ignitor and tongues trough the opening onto the ground when it happened. The frame is bent - yet we can still load and unload the camper. Amazing how tough these things were built.
I carry pretty good insurance coverage, so hopefully I can get it restored. If the camper is totaled, I'll have to get a temporary camper or used trailer until I can get a new TC. We have some family reservations set in July and I'm going camping even if it's in a tent.

Sorry for your incident Rich. I once caught a city sidewalk garbage enclosure in Monterey California with the right rear jack on my previous S&S. I had parked close to the curb and turned out too sharply when departing not accounting enough for the tail sweep. It pulled the jack totally off, but it luckily didn't do any damage to the camper at all. The little garbage enclosure didn't fare so well though.
I have the same year and model as you. I like it a lot. I hope you can get it repaired. |

| Sorry to here of your misshap Rich. Another place you have to watch out for is Street crossings. Like where a street crosses a main hiway or even at a fuel station enterance/exit. Some times the dip is so sharp that the rear jacks will srcape on the large TCs even with the jacks completely up. IT appears that you have a lot of ground clearance but you find out that you really don't have that much. |

| One other consideration upon entering/exiting a parking lot with a severe slope. If you enter an an angle (45 deg) you stand a better chance of negotiating the lot. However then entry is alway much easier than the exit. Even an angle upon departure can cause a touchdown of your jacks and damage to occur. Sometimes its best to look for a different location, unless you have now choice such as we encountered in Colorado last summer. All the lots had extreme sloped entries/exits. On one occasion, we angled the entry and we drove out through the rear of the store along the sidewalk/ROW until we exited on level ground. |

| Ouch! Sorry to read about your misfortune. Hopefully you can get squared away with your insurance company quickly and move on. This will remind me and others the potential for damage when cutting corners or taking large departure angles. |

| The only real fix to the problem of dragging your jacks would be if the jacks were mounted so that when the jack is fully up the pad would be at or above the rear bumper. I know I've dragged mine on a number of occasions. It was just touch and go thank God, did no real damage. |

This is a public forum. I've often wished that there was a slip/lock mechanism for raising the jack foot a little.

That may have been why on some of the early TCs the jacks would swivle up and ride sideways along the camper body. Most were simply removed when the camper was on the truck way back when. Of coarse they were all hand crank ups back then too. Maybe make the back jacks longer so that they could be mounted higher on the TC and then still be able to lift the TC to the same highth as the front one will. |
