I bought diesel last night in Tacoma WA. on Union and Center Street Arco for $2.39 a gallon. Best price I've seen in awhile. Funny how circumstances lead us to be excited about paying under two-fifty for something that should cost no more than a buck twenty five...

I'm a pessimist and assume it went down for the President's address this last week like it did before the November elections. I'll be happy if they stay down though.

It's only down to $2.49 from $2.59 around here for diesel in Colorado Springs.
This past year I've had to change jobs and now use the pickup for daily commuting. I've got to get a beater car for commuting and to 'enjoy' the $1.99 gasoline prices around here, plus better overall mileage. Then leave the camper on the pickup for quick weekend getaways.

Diesels WERE a good idea until big oil raised diesel fuel prices higher than high test gasoline. The trucking companies can absorb this increase by adding fuel surcharges to their bills- what's the private diesel pickup owner to do? except to take it in the shorts!

Yes we curtainly do get craped on. The fack is it costs much less to manufacture diesle fuel then it does reguler gas. Some where around half the cost. They say that the reason it cost moe then reguler is due to the additives. but then the cost of the additives are almost the same on both fuels and many of the additives are the same.

This is what I have found out....

There are two ways to refine oil into unleaded gasoline. One way gets you more diesel as a by-product and the other gets you less diesel by-product. In the USA oil is refined yielding the lesser amount of diesel by-product but more unleaded. Since we burn a lot more unleaded this makes sense. In the past diesel was in good supply due to less use. But over time we have gotten more big rigs on the road and more PU's with diesel engines. This may change over time as the newer diesel PU's cost about $10,000 for this engine option so we in fact may see a slight drop in fuel cost but I bet they will sell more to Europe instead. Thus the large reserve of diesel has shrunk. Lastly when we switched to ultra low sulfur diesel, like in Europe our lower cost diesel became desirable in Europe, from a business stand point, the refiners here found that they could sell it to Europe for more money and this would cause supplies to be tighter locally. This in turn caused local prices to rise. A greedy win-win for the oil refiners here.

Long story short the oil refiners are manipulating the supply and thus the cost goes up. Our government is owned by the oil lobby and the pharmaceutical lobby and the defense lobby and the HMO lobby. These 4 pretty much get there own way and in many cases write their own favorable bills which no politician can afford to vote against due to the high need for their cash to remain in office.

Thus we are the victims at the pump. Politicians are wealthy but also greedy as well. To them fuel costs are of little concern. Sort of a like the quote of Marie Antoinette " your Majesty the people have no bread and are starving. Her reply? Let them eat cake!." Of which they had neither of course. But she was so disconnected that she had not a clue or a care.

I just returned home to Tennessee after driving 8500 miles (TN, OR, CA, OR, AZ, TX, TN)- Diesel fuel prices ranged from $2.50 to $3.25, the higher being in CA. They have higher fuel taxes, and gas is always higher there also- It all generally goes up and down following the price of crude, lagging about 2 weeks or less. Crude is $80 a barrel and change today. When crude went down to the $30's about a year ago, we had prices at the pump about half what they are now-

I appreciated the explanation of what percentage of each fuel a refiner can get from a barrel of oil. I think the industry prompted a lot of people to buy diesel engines in their pickups because it was cheaper fuel 10 years ago, and the engines are supposed to last longer- Now diesel prices are often higher that premium gas- And everything travels by truck and train.........

I wish it mostly moved by train as you can move 2000 lbs of cargo 400 miles with 1 gal of diesel.
Yep that equates to a 4000 lbs car getting 200 MPG. Trains are very efficient.
Show me a big rig that can do this. :)

How about speculating what our Summer travel $/gal will be? I'm currently paying $2.99/gal here in Sacramento. I'm guessing a $.50/gal jump for the summer.

USA sends you our prescription drugs for cheap, you send us oil.

Allen: maybe Warren Buffet sees something along those lines too?

Dave: we're at $2.99/gallon in Tacoma - same station that Lost in Space purchased at $2.39 in Jan 2007

A few days past I paid $2.91 but it looks like it is moving up here as well.

Remember it has been cold in the east. This drives up diesel prices due to it being sold as fuel oil and thus tightening the supply. Once it warms up a bit it will settle down but it looks to me to be slightly below unleaded. About 10 cents lower per gal. Unless this economy takes off, which I highly doubt, there will be less truck traffic and so it should be at or slightly below unleaded until fall due to the lower demand.

And here I've thought they just raised the price because they could.
